Atkins Diet Yes or No
As of now, January 2005, more than half of all north Americans are struggling with obesity. The 'quick fix' for 'fat' for the last 40+ years, becoming ever more popular, has become the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet was first popularized in the U. S. Air Force during the 1960's.
The Atkins Diet is very simple --- restrict your carbohydrate intake. And guess what? It actually works. But Dr. Atkins, after the initial few years of his popularized diet, began to make modifications and refinements to the original basic diet. And several other people have taken the basic Atkins Diet, modified it just a little, and come up with a new and very workable diet.

A gout attack strikes when you least expected it, that is to say at night. When you are sleeping peacefully, you suddenly feel some tenderness in the large joint of your big toe. That is a gout flare. That area suddenly becomes swollen, red and extremely painful. You might also develop a fever when suffering from a gout flare. The next 24 hours will also be very painful when having a gout.
What is it? Its actually two things: A food diet and exercise ' yes, simple exercise, like walking a mile a day. A completely balanced, restricted calorie, diet containing a little bit of everything. Eat three meals a day, get your sweets, carbs, veggies, fruits, juices, protein and keep it to 1200 calories a day. Eat your breakfast and go out and walk the dog ' if you don't have one, take your neighbor's. Give this diet a year of your life, weigh yourself every Monday and keep track of your weight, see where you are with it'..and make the change for the rest of your life. When you get to your target weight you may increase the diet to 1600 calories a day.

And not just the Atkins Diet. Any and all diets which highly restrict or eliminate one of the essential food groups we all need to maintain optimal health is equally bad. Stop the insanity and use a REAL diet --- the only proven diet which will work for virtually everyone.
The uric acid tests are used to evaluate the blood levels of uric acid for gout and to assess uric acid levels in the urine for kidney stone formation. The urine test is used most often to monitor patients already diagnosed with kidney stones, but it can also be used to detect disorders that affect the body's production of uric acid and to help measure the level of kidney functioning.
There has been quite a scare recently due to the recall of Vioxx a Cox-2 inhibitor from the NSAIDS family of drugs. Vioxx was a major drug for arthritis pain relief. Sufferers are worried and wondering which drugs are safe and which one may be next to be withdrawn from the market.

All drugs have side effects, there's no disputing that. The question is how dangerous are these side effects and are they worse than the disease they are supposed to help? In the case of Vioxx, the side effects were increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Deadly stuff!
Urine test Patients should be checked for the following medications before the urine test: diuretics, aspirin, pyrazinamide (Tebrazid), phenylbutazone, probenecid (Benemid), and allopurinol (Lopurin). If the patient needs to continue taking these medications, the laboratory should be notified.
Abnormally low uric acid levels may indicate that the patient is taking allopurinol or probenecid for treatment of gout; may be pregnant; or suffers from Wilson's disease or Fanconi's syndrome.
Risks Risks for the blood test are minimal, but may include slight bleeding from the puncture site, a small bruise or swelling in the area, or fainting or feeling lightheaded.
The reason why the Atkins Diet works is because your body metabolizes its stored fat (carbohydrates) in order to burn --- digest --- the protein, fiber and fat you are eating. The Atkins Dieters tend to leave out several food groups, including fruit and vegetables, since they are 'high carb food', and then tend to grab a steak instead, which has very low carbohydrates.
Increased production of uric acid may result from eating foods that are high in purine. Increased uric acid levels due to overproduction may also be caused by gout, by a genetic disorder of purine metabolism, or by metastatic cancer, destruction of red blood cells, leukemia, or cancer chemotherapy.
Normal results Blood test Reference values for blood uric acid vary from laboratory to laboratory but are generally found within the following range: Male: 2.1-8.5 mg/dL; female: 2.0-6.6 mg/dL. Values may be slightly higher in the elderly.
The third myth: Mention the Atkins Diet and most people's reaction is 'Oh, yes, the 'high protein' diet.' Not true at all --- it's a 'Low Carb' diet ' protein intake remains unchanged. Some carbs only, not all, are restricted (versus eliminated completely); fats, particularly in older people, need to be restricted; protein should be kept to 4-6 ounce portions per meal, the lower values for breakfast and lunch. What you need to increase is your intake of high-fiber foods such as celery, etc.

So where does this leave the unfortunate person seeking arthritis pain relief? Well the best thing is not to get caught up in the hype in the press. Keep in touch with your arthritis doctor of rheumatologist to get the up to date news on what's available and what's "safe" to take at the moment.
The laboratory should also be notified if the patient has had recent x-ray tests requiring contrast dyes. These chemicals increase uric acid levels in urine and decrease them in blood.
The second myth: The Atkins Diet is actually a 'Lo-Carb' diet, not a 'No-Carb' diet. What should be cut out are breads, rice and potatoes. Fresh fruits and vegetables should not be cut back and many should be somewhat increased. Finally, after the first month you can 'safely' add breads and potatos --- in limited quantities. One friend of mine eats 1 bite of breads/toasts, etc., served with his meals, such as garlic breads. One bite and not a morsel more.

If your body type and chemical makeup is suitable for the Atkins Diet then by all means use it. Remember that there are several similar alternatives out there which may be more suitable than a strict Atkins, to include some of Dr. Atkins own later work and recommendations. If you have health challenges, to include a tendency for gout or actually suffer from gout, or have diabetes or any of several other disorders, the Atkins diet is definitely something you need to avoid.
Acupuncture for Arthritis Acupuncture is another natural remedy for arthritis. Acupuncture involves the use of needles to stimulate energy centres in the body for effective pain relief. Massage can benefit most types of arthritis, especially fibromyalgia, as it relaxes the muscles. Likewise the application of heat can have a relaxing and pain relieving effect.
When suffering from a gout, there are more factors of risk involved. However, one of those factors is the head of the list when talking about a gout attack. Elevated uric acid levels in your blood, also know as hyperuricemia is the main risk in a gout. All people who suffer from this condition are predisposed to having a gout flare. As your levels of acid rise in your blood, so does the risk of having a gout attack. Furthermore, this gout flare is very unpredictable. No one can say for sure when you are likely to have a gout attack. However, there are some factors that are thought to trigger the gout flare. Certain medicines, alcohol, stress and some other medical problems that you might suffer from may trigger a gout. Even if such factors are thought to be the ones responsible for a gout attack, there are many times that neither you nor your doctor can say for sure what was the cause of your gout flare. To predict the time of the chances of you having a gout attack can be done. This is not quite certain, but it may give you an idea. all you have to do is visit your doctor and have your levels of uric acid measured. This is the way to predict if you are likely to suffer from a gout attack in the future or not.
